Extracts from "A Career in Music?"

Starting Out

On the assumption that you can play an instrument, write songs and sing, the latter is not  necessarily essential, there are some fairly basic and not so basic things which need to be considered and done by you.

You have to learn about the business you are in (just like an apprenticeship) and you don’t learn it from playing computer games or watching TV shows such as "The X Factor." A painter for instance will look at other styles of art and will learn about colours and how to mix them. You need to do the same thing, study different types of music, what makes it good or not so good?

Having said all that there is another school of thought which says don’t listen to the charts or what is being played at concerts in discos or anywhere else. Go away and do your own thing and develop your own style.

As with any other business if you want to make it and be successful (whatever your definition of that is) then you must be committed to you career path.

The music business is not an easy path to follow, but it is enjoyable and rewarding

Before you embark on your journey to fame and fortune or just a living in the music business bear in mind the following Do’s and Don’ts which will help you:

DO have a good personal attitude - no hissy fits or dramatics!.

DO think positively about yourself and what you do.

DON’T blame anyone else if something goes wrong, 99.9% of the time it is your own fault.

DON’T act like a prat.
